The Winery - The Weegmüllers, an old noble family from Zurich, emigrated from Switzerland to the Rhineland Palatinate in 1657. The family began producing wine in 1685. In 1737, the Weegmüllers settled in Haardt, a village close to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Haardt, also known as ‘the balcony of the Palatinate’ offers breathtaking views over the Rhine Valley. Almonds, lemons, figs and unique vines can all be found growing on this sunny terrace of Germany. The people behind the winery - The Weegmüller Winery has been in family hands for 11 generations, creating wines that impress with their fine fruit, density and elegance. This they owe to expertise of winery owner and winemaker Stefanie Weegmüller-Scherr, who has made wines of the highest quality for more than 30 years. The responsibility for the management and care of the more than 14 ha of prime vineyards are Rainer Klein and Fabian Krämer. Gabriele Weegmüller, the sister of Stefanie Weegmüller-Scherr, is responsible for marketing and customer care, with Stefanie Widmayer as the winery contact. The wines - Riesling, the king of grape varieties, dominates the white wine range. Also on offer are Pinot Gris, Scheurebe, Gewurztraminer, Sylvaner and Rieslaner. The focus is on dry wines, but high quality noble sweet wines from Auslese to Beerenauslese complete the picture. More recently, Stefanie Weegmüller-Scherr planted Grüner Veltliner for the first time, which quickly won success at the international level. Winery philosophy - Ecological awareness and a willingness to understand natural processes and work with them form the basis for the production of great wines. Reducing harvest levels by thinning the growing grapes and by selective harvesting are the key principles used at the Weegmüller winery, in order to produce high quality wines. Winemaking - Stefanie Weegmüller- Scherr is the first women to have worked in Germany’s male-dominated wine industry. She has not only mastered the technical aspects of winemaking, but brings heart and sensuality to her work, allowing the full character of the wine to express itself. First, the high-quality grapes are gently pressed. They are then fermented in modern stainless steel tanks, or in large oak barrels. In this way, every wine reaches full maturity. Their quality is shown by the numerous regional, national and international awards they have won. Vineyards - Situated in the shelter of the Palatinate Forest ridge, 90% of the vineyards belong to the classified locations in the Palatine, as qualified by the 1828 Royal Bavarian Land Tax terroir classification. Vineyards in the Bürgergarten, Mandelring and Herzog layers thrive on coloured sandstone weathered soils. The Herrenletten vineyard sits on a deep bed of clay, with a limestone mix on top.
